What makes a good father and whose example is the best to follow?
Without a doubt, the best example of a father is our Heavenly Father, God!
Jesus arrived on earth to give the world a revelation of the Father. The prophecy concerning Jesus was that He is the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, etc.
Jesus said to Philip, He who has seen me has seen the Father.
So, in looking at Jesus we see the Father. What do we see in Jesus?
We see compassion. He observed how the crowds followed Him and He had compassion on them because they were as sheep without a shepherd.
So, Compassion, is a great characteristic of a good father.
In addition, He anticipated their physical need for food and nourishment, so He commanded them to sit down. He took five loaves and two fish and He blessed it and gave God thanks for it and he multiplied it to feed a crowd of 5000 with much left over. They all ate and they were all filled.
So, provision is another great characteristic of a good father.
One Dad wanted to send his child to a Christian School, so in the evenings, he delivered pizzas to pay for that expense which was over and above the budget.
Fathers: be good providers! Anticipate the needs of your households ahead of time!
In Jesus we also see a paralytic let down through a roof top and when Jesus prayed for him He said, Thy sins be forgiven thee! When He saw that amazed the Pharisees and to show He had power to forgive sin, He said to the crippled man:
Arise, take up your bed and walk and he did!
So, forgiveness is another great characteristic of a good father.
Again, when Jesus prayed to the Father and said, Father if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, but nevertheless not my will, but Yours be done. This shows discipline.
The Scriptures say Jesus learned obedience from the things which he suffered.
When Jesus was baptized, the voice of the Father from heaven spoke saying, This is my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased!
So, another characteristic, is to encourage our children and let them know their right behavior brings honor to the home and to the family and that honor returns to them in the form of praise and favor. Don’t be afraid to say, Good Job! Approval is a form of acceptance and goes deep into the spirit of a child.
Jesus said, Come unto Me, for I am meek and lowly of heart and you shall find rest unto your souls. A good father is gentle and not harsh. This brings a sense of well-being to the child and assurance of being loved along with the knowledge there is hope for a good future. The Bible exhorts fathers: Provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
So, gentleness is another great characteristic of a good father.
Jesus promised, I will never leave you nor forsake you. This is a great characteristic of one who is faithful. Being dependable and faithful is what every child needs.
While this is not a comprehensive list, it is a good one to get started on: Compassion, Provision, Forgiveness, Discipline, Praise, Gentleness, and Faithfulness!
HAPPY FATHERS DAY!
